DJP try
to offer fixed fees whenever possible. We can offer these for undefended divorces, some separation agreements, employment cases and for some sheriff court actions. The most popular service we offer is the fixed fee, one-off consultation. For £80 plus VAT – total £96 – you can see a solicitor for up to an hour to discuss your case in general. Issues can be explored in a broadbrush, strategic and tactical manner. Future costs can be considered. Advice can be given that might save you time and money in the long run. There is no obligation beyond the £96 meeting. This popular service is a useful troubleshooting exercise for people who just want to use a solicitor for restricted time
and cost. If you want to use our services beyond that, we can then pick up the case on your behalf.
We can also offer capped fees – where your costs are limited to a specified amount and we would not carry out work beyond that limit until or if you have a chance to evaluate the situation. We do still charge some cases on a traditional hourly rate basis, but
we are trying to move away from that as far as possible.
We cannot produce a complete menu of options and prices like a restaurant. Legal cases do not work in a predictable, “one size fits all” fashion. But whenever possible we will apply fixed or capped fees to
your case.
In some situations, you can recover some or all of your court costs from your opponent. But that rule can also work against you. The biggest factor in most civil cases (family law, employment law, general civil legal disputes) is cost. Fear of cost makes many cases settle. We are constantly mindful of the importance of keeping our fees proportionate to your case and letting you make informed choices about budget.
You can make instalment payments for our fees on a monthly basis, both during and after your case has finished.
Please note that we do not offer Legal Aid funded services.
